Heringssalat is a traditional German salad made with herring and various fresh ingredients, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 400 grams herring fillets
  • 2 apples, diced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 200 grams pickled cucumbers, diced
  • 200 grams sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak the herring fillets in water for a few hours to remove excess salt.
  2. Drain the herring and cut into bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a large bowl, combine herring, diced apples, onions, and pickled cucumbers.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix sour cream, mayonnaise, and lemon juice together.
  5. Pour the dressing over the herring mixture and stir gently to combine.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving.

Notes

  • Best served with bread or boiled potatoes.
  • Can be prepared a day in advance for better flavors.
